Internship program gives employees experience & potential to stay - part 2

Feb 16, 2015

Previously, we heard from current and former interns about how they got involved in the program and their experience at RVM.  Let's hear about how they were hired on permanently and lessons they have learned.

Transitioning to permanent employment

Shannon-Hartman_story.jpgBodor: "Internships typically last six months, if they're full-time.  Part-time positions last for a year.  A manager has some work that needs performed and then after the internship is up, there is a discussion to see if the department can absorb/hire another person."

Stratford: "When I was offered a position at RVM for Insurance Verifications, I decided to accept not only because of the relationships I had formed, but because I truly wanted to start my career in Medical Billing and Coding. My goal had been to get a job as soon as I could after graduation."

Hartman: "I began my internship on January 5and will be complete it February 11. I hope to continue employment with RVM, not only because of the excellent working environment, but also because I see so much room for personal improvement and advancement with this company."

Aileen Moore, Accounts Receivable Specialist: "When my internship was completed, there wasn’t an opening, but I did start in July in Verifications. I will have been here 5 years in July. I like it here and the RV Difference values are important to me."

Opportunities taken and lessons learned

Interns-at-RVM_story.jpgBodor: "Being at a small company is a great place to have an internship because you'll be exposed to a lot of different areas and people.  I think these opportunities are good for the community because employees who are newer and in the RVM talent pipeline can get the kind of experience that helps them get their foot in the door."

Cordova: "The real world experience that one gets through the internship cannot be truly emulated in the classroom.  Also, I think it's important for interns to provide information back to the college about items that should be included in the curriculum so that a more complete student experience can be achieved."

Wake:  "I definitely feel like my education and internship both helped prepare me for my new career. My education helped me grasp the basics and the big picture of healthcare, and my internship honed in on the skills I learned in school to help me see how everything is connected."

Khamis: "I had never worked for a corporate company so hearing a group of people speak about how they wanted all their employees to feel appreciated made me excited to work for a company that cared so much about its people. Some of the work I was doing as an intern is similar to the work I do now, so I felt prepared for my full time position. I was unfamiliar with dialysis and Renal Ventures, so my time as an intern really gave me the chance to understand the industry I was in."

Jepkema: "Even though it’s called an internship, it doesn’t feel like one. You are still doing real work with a real team. I’d highly recommend anyone to apply for an internship with RVM."
