For his grandchildren, Anton chose home dialysis

Oct 26, 2015

As part of RVM's partnership with Home Dialysis Central, we  present a home peritoneal dialysis success story.  Meet Anton from New Jersey and his path to home dialysis with RVM's help...

Home-dialysis-story---Anton_story2.jpgAnton had a decision to make.  His kidneys were failing and he didn't want to make the massive lifestyle changes necessary to begin dialysis.  But thinking of his five grandchildren motivated him to make a decision and put Anton on the path to home dialysis.

Initially, Anton had an access put into his arm for hemodialysis, but was not happy about that decision.  He wanted to learn more about another dialysis modality: peritoneal dialysis (PD).

"When I first learned that I was going to need dialysis, I was against it all together.  But thinking of my grandchildren changed my mind and I started doing research into peritoneal dialysis," said Anton.

Renal Ventures Management (RVM) has approximately 350 patients on peritoneal dialysis across 43 renal centers in Texas, New Jersey, Iowa, Arkansas, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania.  One of them, Anton, discussed dialysis options with his rheumatologist, who suggested he look into peritoneal dialysis, which led Anton on the path to home therapy.

Anton attended RVM’s Kidney Care classes for pre-dialysis education and chose the modality that matched his lifestyle. "It's not easy starting dialysis because you are going into the unknown," states Anton. With Anton's healthcare team's help, he began to feel comfortable.

PD has allowed him to travel, spend time with his grandchildren, and have flexibility in his life. Deciding when to use a cycler or manual exchange gives him the freedom to be on his grandkids' schedule and attend their sporting events. Anton works closely with the RVM PD nurse and calls the help line when needed and any issues that arise are quickly resolved. "I appreciate the flexibility home therapy dialysis provides compared to being in the clinic three days a week.  I feel like I can have a normal life," said Anton.

He admits that there are times when he gets discouraged. Most recently, there were issues getting an appropriate drain volume. However, he was able to troubleshoot, solve the issue, and move on.  “Sometimes it can get you down a little. But to keep life going at the same pace you had before, you figure out what you can do.  I accept when I can’t do something and get help,” said Anton.

The support from his physician, family, and RVM PD staff all have contributed to a successful home dialysis experience, but a positive attitude is at the center of Anton’s success.
