But you don’t need to be a movie star to be a super hero. In fact, that was the focus recently when Renal Ventures Management held its annual Employee Appreciation Week. The theme was “Super Heroes,” since we think all of our employees are super heroes who treat our patients with the best care.

Each day of Employee Appreciation Week featured different events, including breakfast for all employees, T-shirts with a Renal Ventures super hero logo for employees to wear on Friday, healthy snacks, pins, and a catered lunch. Our managers even handed out “thank you” notes to each employee with a note indicating the employee’s super powers.

The Renal Ventures family experienced the wrath of the storm personally in New Jersey when flooding caused by the hurricane forced the closure of the Renal Center of Somerville.

Just six months later the state-of-the-art outpatient dialysis facility has reopened, earlier than expected. “With the help of a dedicated construction team and cooperation from local government officials, the $1 million renovation was completed in just six months for a project that would typically take nearly a year,” said Karen Marcus, Divisional Director of Operations East.

The reopening means that more than 45 patients are undergoing weekly dialysis treatments. That’s an increase from before the storm, which the company credits to its qualified staff and history of quality care.

“Undergoing dialysis is a life-long commitment for me to maintain my health and well-being,” said Joanne Servino, Renal Center of Somerville patient since 2009. “It can also be physically and emotionally challenging. I look forward to getting back to the familiar and friendly faces.”

The most obvious example of that occurs in our clinics, where nurses, dieticians and social workers interact daily with patients.
Scott preparing medication, at the medical clinic and with the school children.

Scott Payne just took the trip of a lifetime to a tropical island – but it wasn’t a pleasure cruise. The Licensed Practical Nurse, who handles biomedical work at Renal Ventures clinics in West Virginia, recently visited a village in Haiti to help provide much-needed healthcare.

Payne made the trip with a group from a local church, which has supported the ministry of Pastor Geordany Joseph since the 1960s. The Pastor oversees an orphanage that normally would have about 10 children, but is now home to as many as 30 orphans since the massive earthquake that struck the country in 2010.

The trip down was an experience for Scott, who saw the devastation in Port au Prince first hand after flying into the city. After a long, jarring bus trip north to the tiny village of Le Jeune, Scott was impressed by the people he met. “There’s a strong sense of community in there,” he said. “They are very poor, but they come together to do things like plant. They do well with what they have, but they have very little.

That was a theme Scott saw repeated throughout the 10 days his group was in Haiti. The group set up a medical clinic to do health assessments, treat patients with injuries and even do some minor surgery. In all, they treated more than 500 people for everything from broken bones to lacerations.

But even more were treated for malnutrition, a fact not lost on Scott. “It’s startling and very sad to see the babies with orange hair, signaling that they are malnourished. It reminds you of the fact that we take so much for granted in this country. We throw away SO much food. The kids there get just one good meal a day, in the afternoon, and even that is only because of the support the pastor receives from back in the US. It’s really an eye-opener when you get back to your climate-controlled home with wireless internet, food and the like.”

Scott had another eye-opening experience, but this was a more positive experience. “When I was invited as a nurse to accompany the group, I had to raise the money to fly there and also bring some medicine. I e-mailed my superior at Renal Ventures to ask if the company ever set aside money to support trips like this. Not only did she respond immediately, but said that SHE was going to pay for my trip out of HER pocket! And then Renal Ventures also supported the trip, which made it possible for me to go and work, without any cost to me, and bring needed medicine.”

“It’s one thing for the company to even give me the time off to do this, but they did so much more. And then, while I was gone, they sent someone to cover my work at the clinics so I didn’t come back to a mess of work. This is what makes Renal Ventures different than any other company.”
