Usually, RVM nurses and techs only get to see our patients during dialysis.  However, Certified Hemodialysis Tech Mariah Baxter from the Renal Center of West Beaumont wanted to show new employee and Patient Care Tech Zachary Simon a kidney transplant in action and promote the success story of a patient receiving the organ donation.

Baxter and Simon visited the Methodist J.C. Walter Jr. Transplant Center, which is a part of the Houston Methodist system, on August 12.  The center was founded in 1985 and performed 462 transplants in 2012, of which 186 were kidney transplants.

Simon was still in training at the time and was very enthusiastic about the visit. "From the moment we walked into the hospital, Mariah and I were shown nothing but the best Methodist had to offer.  Everyone we met was so kind and hospitable, always willing to take time out of their busy schedules to talk to us," said Simon.

"Methodist allowed us to be a part of the whole thing starting with the removal of the kidney from the donor to the implanting process into our recipient," Simon said.

"The experience was a valuable one for Zachary and lit a fire in our co-workers hearts and perhaps will inspire others.  It was an honor to be welcomed by the center and to share the experience with Zachary while he was still in training," said Baxter.
