Albumin comes from Protein rich foods. Albumin is needed to fight infections and prevent muscle loss. Not eating enough protein causes low Albumin leading to poor nutrition, increased risk of infections, swelling, muscle weakness and even death.

Eat more of these High Protein foods:

  • Beef (steak, hamburger, roast, veal)
  • Poultry (chicken, turkey, Cornish hen)
  • Fish (fresh or frozen, shrimp, crawfish, tuna, oysters, crab, clams, scallops)
  • Pork (roast, chops)
  • Wild Game (venison, rabbit, squirrel, duck, goose, pheasant, goat)
  • Eggs (egg whites, substitutes)
  • Cottage Cheese
  • Tofu

Helpful hints:

  • Add extra egg whites to salads, tuna or chicken salad, hot cereal, meatloaf, meatballs, cooked vegetables, rice, sauces
  • Add extra meat, poultry, fish to casseroles and stews
  • Use high protein supplements: drinks, powders, bars
  • Always eat the protein portion of your meal first
  • Use protein foods in casseroles, salads, sandwiches, soups or stir-fry
  • Try ground meat, chops, ribs, roasts, shish-ka-bob, steaks or stews
  • Your dietitian can guide you in using protein bars, protein cookies, protein drinks and protein powder
