Tips on Eating Well with a Low Appetite

  • Take frequent small meals and snacks, as in sample menu (below)
  • Eat your favorite foods often
  • Drink after eating, not before or during a meal
  • Drink high calorie beverages, such as fortified milk, milkshakes, juices, nectars or liquid supplements like Nepro. Avoid low-calorie or diet drinks.
  • Add milk, cream, half & half, butter, sugar or honey to foods and drinks to boost calories.
  • Make meals as relaxed and pleasant as possible. Try to eat together as a family, play music, and allow plenty of time to eat everything on the plate.
  • Increase your physical activity every day. This will improve your appetite.
  • Use convenience foods as snacks if unable to prepare. Some suggestions are frozen pizza rolls, chicken nuggets, instant cereals, fruit cup, fruit rolls, pudding, breakfast bars, granola bars, dried fruit and nuts.
